In our last Roasters Jam earlier in the year, Marty from Sunshine Coast Coffee Roastery claimed the People's Choice Trophy for their extraordinary take on coffee. The coffee challenge? A formidable Ethiopian Grade 3 Natural Special Preparation sourced from the talented farmer, Nensebo Arsi, in the Oromia region.

Our first Roasters Jam of 2023 was an "espresso roast for dairy milk" comp. It tested not only the roasters' mastery of the craft but also how they could master the perfect extraction and brewing recipes. This time around we're turning up the heat by focusing the competition on serving an alternative milk-based coffee to our eager audience.

The green beans will be sent out a couple of weeks prior to the event and the roasters will be asked to roast for espresso, experiment with extraction, and come up with a 4oz MILKLAB Oat based recipe. They will fill out a PowerPoint presentation to be shown on the evening, in which they discuss their approach to roasting and extracting the mystery coffee.

On the night of the event, the roasters will provide 1kg of what they think represents the best roast profile of the coffee. Using the roasters unique recipe, the competition baristas will then prepare each coffee and serve to the audience. Using a cupping format, the assembled throng of caffeine aficionados will then taste and vote, using poker chips, for their favorite cup. After which, everybody will gather together to watch the short presentations from each roaster.

The favourite cup will be unveiled, and the trophy of triumph will be presented in a grand finale. There will also be an amazing selection of prizes donated from MILKLAB up for grabs.
